popurri

popurri is the newest venture by british klezmer clarinet virtuoso john macnaughton. building upon the recently rediscovered repertoire of the pre-wwi clarinetist titunshnayder, the 6-piece ensemble is firmly rooted in the eastern european klezmer tradition - yet their original arrangements sound fresh and innovative.

featuring several, exceptional melody players besides macnaughton - anna lowenstein on violin, robin timmis on viola and jon davis on accordion -, popurri's arrangements of often simple melodic lines are rich, varied and intricate. the unusually subtle and responsive rhythm section - theo malka-wishart on double bass and david soin tappeser on drum set - adds driving momentum, unexpected tempo-changes and at times daring rhythmic modulations to the mix of (un-)typical freylekhs, horas and doinas.

having recorded their first ep in late 2017, the band is expected to begin touring in the spring of 2018.
