oysland embodies a new generation of klezmer music, infusing yiddish roots with balkan beats. the was formed in 2014, born of its members’ desire to connect with east london’s yiddish and eastern european heritage. the band released their first album 'vundervelt' in early 2017, winning the world music network battle of the bands.
having studied with many leading lights of the klezmer revival, founding members and bandleaders olga baron (violin) and john macnaughton (clarinet) come equipped with a deep understanding of traditional klezmer music. the ubiquitous, multi-linguistic, slovak vocalist lori secanska adds her own profound knowledge of balkan music, whilst the talented cypriot guitarist Iakovos Loukas adds a greek flavour to the melting pot. these influences mingle together to create a repertoire that's laced with tradition and heritage -yet unafraid to re-invent.
with the additional support of twm dylan on double bass, karen yarnell on percussion and david soin tappeser on drum set, the 7-piece band has become a musical force to be reckoned with. oysland regularly performs their unique mixture of infectious, upbeat dance sets, heartfelt melodies, and tear-jerking doinas at venues, festivals and functions in and around the u.k.
